This project wouldn’t have come about if it wasn’t for Dave, a.k.a. Mr David T Lee (don’t tell him I’ve called him Dave!), a down-to-earth guy who’s into mechanics and high-end valeting, with a gift for customising motorbikes and cars.
I’m an entrepreneur with a thing about value for money. I like the challenge of living well but affordably, and sharing how to do this with other people. For example, I turn residential properties into smart co-living spaces for millenials and working professionals. Even though I own a house, I enjoyed the lifestyle of living in shared accommodation with my tenants, and got to understand their needs. I also run a caravan hire business, popular with festival-goers.
I’ve always wanted to live in a camper van and to be a bit of a digital nomad as my work is centred on technology (I create animations and survey solutions) and isn’t location-based. However, the thought of living for months in a caravan park didn’t float my boat. I also didn’t like the thought of being identified as sleeping in a camper van or RV, with closed curtains, because you stick out like a sore thumb and become a target for theft. It’s also unfair on residents as it can be uncomfortable thinking that a stranger is sleeping outside one’s home.
So when I came across ‘stealth camping’ and my friend suggested I get a Vauxhall van , which is box-like in construction and has no windows at the back, the idea of Stealth Van Living was born.
The way that I define stealth living is that people don’t notice that I’m actually living and working in my van – I can live anywhere and work anywhere. I have a bike so I can park for free and cycle to shops or gym etc. I have two forms of seating as I spend long hours working on the computer. I’ve created my own multifunctional double bed/single bed/couch/chair using simple materials. There are lots of other customisations Dave and I have made lots of other customisations that make the experience of being in my van not that different to having my own room.
If you work away from home and are keen on trying this out for yourself – but want to avoid the pitfalls I’ve encountered along the way – download my 9 Must-Know Issues for Van Life Living. You can also find out which products have worked well for me and if you want your van customised for you (and it’s a Vauxhall, like mine), I thoroughly recommend Dave.
